Before you share a photo: a privacy checklist

Sharing a photo takes a second. A few quick checks first can protect your home, your routine, and the people in your photos.

Updated

1. Check the hidden details

Swipe up on the photo in Photos. If there is a map, the photo carries its location. You also see when it was taken and with which device.

2. Look closely at the picture

  • House numbers, street signs, and the view from your window
  • Mail, tickets, name tags, and ID cards
  • License plates
  • School uniforms and badges
  • Screens and reflections that show more than you meant

3. Ask the people in the photo

Before you post a photo of friends, family, or children, check that they are OK with it.

4. Think about how you send it

When you send the photo file itself, as an email attachment, a file, or a link to cloud storage, the hidden details usually go with it. Some social apps remove some of them when you post, but it is hard to check what they keep.

5. Leave out what you do not want to share

In the share sheet, tap Options and turn off Location to leave out the location for that share. To leave out the date and time, the device, and the rest too, share a clean copy.

Questions

Is turning off Location in the share sheet enough?

It leaves out the location for that share only. The date and time, the device, and the camera details are still sent.

Does PixelGuard upload my photos?

No. PixelGuard works on your iPhone and never sends your photos off it.

Can I use PixelGuard for free?

Yes. You can check any photo and clean up to 3 photos a day for free. Pro removes the daily limit and lets you clean many photos at once.
