How to remove the location from photos on iPhone
Photos taken on iPhone can save the place where they were taken. When you send the photo file, the location can go with it. Here is how to handle it with the settings built into iOS, and what those settings leave behind.
Updated
Check whether a photo has a location
- Open the Photos app and tap the photo.
- Swipe up, or tap the Info button (ⓘ).
- If you see a map, the photo has a saved location.
The same panel also shows when the photo was taken, the device, and camera details.

Remove the location from a photo you already have
- Open the photo in Photos, then tap the More button (…).
- Tap Adjust Info, then tap Adjust Location.
- Tap No Location.
To change several photos at once, tap Select, choose the photos, then follow the same steps.
Photos keeps the original, so you can bring the location back with Revert. The date, time, and device details stay in the photo.
Stop saving the location in new photos
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Tap Camera, then tap Never.
Photos you already took keep their location. Other camera apps have their own setting.
Remove it all at once with PixelGuard
PixelGuard removes the location together with the other hidden details (metadata) in one tap, right on your iPhone. Your photos are never uploaded.
- Removes the location, date and time, device details, and more together
- By default, saves a clean copy and keeps your original as it is
- Check any photo and clean up to 3 photos a day for free
- Works from the share sheet, too
Questions
Does turning off Location in the share sheet change my photo?
No. It only leaves the location out of what you send that time. The photo in your library keeps its location.
If I choose No Location in Photos, is the location gone for good?
No. Photos keeps the original, and you can bring it back with Revert. To give someone a copy without the location, share it with Location turned off, or save a clean copy.
Do social apps remove the location for me?
Some services remove some of this information when you post, but it depends on the service and on how you send the photo, for example as a file or in original quality. Removing it before you send means you do not have to rely on it.
